Udham Singh Nagar is named for freedom fighter and Indian revolutionary Sardar Udham Singh who shot Michael O’Dwyer for the Jallianwala bagh massacre. Rudrapur city is the headquarter of district Udham Singh Nagar or U S Nagar.

According to Historians, hundreds of years ago Rudrapur village was established by a devotee of Lord Shiva or by Hindu tribal chief called Rudra. It has passed through phases of development to take the shape of city Rudrapur. During the reigns of the Mughal emperor Akbar, this region was handed over to king Rudra Chandra in 1588. The king Rudra established a permanent military camp to free Tarai from day today invasions. After that this Totaly neglected village was filled with new colors and human activities.

During the British rule, Nainital was made a district and in 1864-65 the whole Tarai and Bhawar were put under the “Tarai and Bhawar Government Act” which was governed directly by the British crown.

In the past, this region was full of forest land and neglected until 1948 due to a difficult climate. Marshy lands, extreme heat, a place full of wild animals and no means of transportation prevented the human race to form a colony here. But today due to the efforts of Community and government this place is the most developed region in the Uttarakhand State and the Financial very stable land.

The history of development started in 1948 when the problem of partition brought the refugee problem with it. A large number of an immigrant from northwest and eastern areas were re-established in 164.2 square km land area under “Up Nivesh Yojana”. Personal dwellers were not allotted land in accordance with the crown grant act. In December 1948, The first batch of immigrants came here.

People from Kashmir, Punjab, Kerala, Eastern UP, Garhwal, Kumaon, Bengal, Haryana, Rajasthan, Nepal, and South India live in groups in this district. This country is an example of unity in diversity with people from many religions and professions and so is this Tarai land of Udham Singh Nagar which has its heart at Rudrapur.

Formation of Udham Singh Nagar District

Udham Singh Nagar was a part of district Nainital before the Tarai belt was separated to form the present US Nagar district on 30 September 1995.

By 1994, the demand for separate statehood for Uttarakhand achieved almost unanimous acceptance among both the local populace and political parties all over the region of west Uttar Pradesh. Rudrapur was made the headquarter of the district of Udham Singh Nagar.

After the Parliament of India passed the Uttar Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2000 on 9 November 2000, Udham Singh Nagar including Rudrapur became a part of Uttarakhand, the 27th state of the Republic of India.

Udham Singh Nagar district is the modern agricultural, educational and industrial hub of Uttarakhand State. People of all regions are found here, so it is called unity in diversity.

Gurudwara Shri Nanakmatta Sahib: Nanakmatta Sahib Gurudwara is located at Nanakmatta village in Udham Singh Nagar district. Nanakmatta, also known as Gorakhmata is a great pilgrimage center of the Sikhism religion. A dam has been constructed on river Saryu at Nanak Matta forming Nanak Sagar which adds up to the beauty of Nanakmatta. Rudrapur To Nanakmatta distance is 56 km from the Rudrapur-Tanakpur motor route. Nanakmatta is 18 km away from Khatima and 12 km from Sitarganj city.

Atariya Temple: Atariya Temple is a Hindu temple built by King Rudra in Rudrapur. According to a famous folktale, when King Rudra Chandra was passing through his chariot, it got stuck in the marshy land after which he decided to build a temple and well at that spot. A ten-day fair is held here during the Navratras. A large number of pilgrims visit this shrine during this occasion. The renowned shrine of Goddess Atariya is 2 km from the bus standoff Rudrapur to Haldwani route.

Drona Sagar: Drona Sagar Lake is a well-known spot in the quaint town of Kashipur. It is associated with the story of the Pandavas and Guru Dronacharya of the epic Mahabharatha. According to a famous legend, the Pandavas created the Drona Sarovar for their Guru Dronacharya as Guru Dakshina. As cited in the Puranas (holy text), the water of Drona Sagar Lake is as divine as the water of river Ganga. At present, the Archaeological Survey of India protects this place.

Giri Sarovar: This charming lake is blossomed with Lotus flowers and is surrounded by various temples. This is an ideal picnic spot for spending time. Giri Sarovar Lake is about 2 km from the Kashipur bus stand located on the Kashipur to Ramnagar route.

Chaiti Devi Temple/ Maa Bal Sundari Devi: Chaiti Mandir, also known as Bal Sundari Mandir, is a Hindu temple located in Kashipur. The Chaiti Mela held here during the sacred Navratras and flocks of devotees visit this shrine during the festival. In autumn season one can see the snow-clad peaks of Trishul and its surroundings. This temple is located at a distance of 2.5 km from the Kashipur bus stand and lies on the Kashipur to Bajpur route.

G B Pant University of Agriculture & Technology: G B Pant University in Pantnagar is the first-ever agricultural university in India. It was inaugurated by the first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on the 17th of November, 1960 as the Uttar Pradesh Agricultural University (UPAU). Later the name was changed to Govind Ballabh Pant University of Agriculture and Technology (GBPUAT) in 1972 to memorialize the great freedom fighter Govind Ballabh Pant.

Nanak Sagar Dam: Nanak Sagar Dam is an earthen embankment dam situated in Udham Singh Nagar district. The Nanak Sagar Dam is built on the River Deoha or Ghaghara River (a tributary of Ganga River). This Dam is 16.5 meters high and 19200 meters long. Nanak Sagar Reservoir was completed in the year 1962. This earth dam was built with the purpose of irrigating the fields and storing water.

Haripura Dam: The Haripura Dam is an earth dam, built on Bhakhara river in Udham Singh Nagar District of Uttarakhand. River Ganga is the basin area of this Haripura Dam. The dam has a maximum height of 10.98 meters and a length of 7.90 Kilometres. This is an irrigation dam and water of this dam irrigates the Tarai area of Uttarakhand & areas of Rampur District of UP.
